Greens, purples and pinks
Auroras grace the night sky in across the northern U.S.

A severe geomagnetic storm produced a spectacle in the skies on Monday night. The aurora boreales showed up big even in places as far south as Texas!

Monday night, residents in Spokane were able to see a wide range of colors from deep purples to greens dancing in the sky. Geomagnetic storms occur when charged particles sent by the Sun crash into the Earth's magnetic field, and these particles, depending on intensity, show up in different colors in our skies.

It's been active!

The sun is expected to reach its most active period in the coming year, as it reaches its peak in its 11-year solar cycle; a periodic 11-year change in the sun's activity.

Residents as far south as Texas were able to see pinkish skies. Auroras can show up again tonight, so make sure to check the cloud coverage in your area on our WeatherRadar.
